Why do you call a sunspot a "spot" on the sun, and how big can they get?

    Re: sunspots

    Hello Kester,

To be honest with you, I don't know the "official" reason for the name of sunspot. But as for your second question, the largest sunspot group since 1900 was one in 1947 which measured 6132 millionths of the solar disk, or 18 times the surface area of the Earth.

    Have a nice weekend
