    The Wave

    How often does the wave occur? (Carissa D. FWMS)

    Hi Carissa,

    I'm not sure what wave you are talking about.  If you could make that a little clearer, I'm sure someone can answer your question.

    Best,

    Hi,

    You said to make this clearer. Yesterday, I was watching some of the videos of things that go on in our atmosphere. One was called the wave. It looked like a blast of fire going around the sun. I wanted to know how often this happens.

    Hope this helps make things clearer. (Carissa D. FWMS)

    Re: The Wave

    Hi Carissa,

    It sounds to me like you are talking about the waves that sometimes acompany CMEs. You can see them in ultraviolet light and they often do go around a lot of the sun.  These are not too common right now at solar minimum. You get a few every few months when a energetic active regions show up. They are more common at solar maximum. I don't know the exact numbers, but as the number of CMEs increases there are more, I think a few a month.

    Hi Carissa,

    One wave you might be talking about, and I'm not sure, but will give it a go. Check out this link from the NASA Soho site;

    http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/gallery/Helioseismology/mdi026.html

    It describes what amounts to solar "quakes" on the Sun's surface! These events produce seismic-like waves seen in earthquakes, or those now often talked about ocean events, called tsunamis, that are large ocean waves as a result of earthquakes!
